BURROWING PARAKEET   -   CYANOLISEUS PATAGONUS

The Burrowing Parakeet, sometimes called Burrowing Parrot, is a large monotypic parrot species found in southern South America. It is a colonial nester, digging nest holes in sandstone cliffs. The largest colonies can have tens of thousands of birds, though the ones that I have seen have had only a few dozen at most. Despite the social breeding system, studies have suggested that Burrowing Parakeets are almost completely monogamous. There are three subspecies, differing slightly in plumage color. Two of them are shown in these photos.

The nominate subspecies, found farther south in Argentina, is more colorful with red bellies and yellow flanks. This pair was at a small colony of around a dozen birds. (S6)
