FLAMINGOS -
PHOENICOPTERIDAE
 |
Caribbean Flamingo
Phoenicopterus ruber
Playa Bachas, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador.
Unlike the other neotropical flamingos, this species
is only found in coastal regions and never in the Andes. Note that SACC
still maintains them lumped with Greater Flamingo (P. roseus) of the old world. |
 |
Chilean Flamingo
Phoenicopterus chilensis
Laguna de los Pozuelos, Jujuy province, Argentina.
The Chilean Flamingos are the nearer ones on the far
right and far left, showing no black at all in their wings and distinct
pink spots on their legs. Both Andean and Puna Flamingos are also in
this shot. |
 |
Andean Flamingo
Phoenicoparrus andinus
Laguna de los Pozuelos, Jujuy province, Argentina.
Most of these are Andean Flamingos, but there are a
couple of Punas in the frame too. The Andeans show a huge amount of
black in the folded wing, and have predominantly black bills. |
 |
James's (Puna) Flamingo
Phoenicoparrus jamesi
Laguna de los Pozuelos, Jujuy province, Argentina.
All of these are Puna Flamingos, though many people,
including SACC, still call them James's Flamingos. They show only a
little black in the folded wing, and have mostly yellow bills. |
