This is the most widespread of the two South American dippers, found in the Andes from Venezuela to Bolivia, as well as in the Santa Marta mountains. (S8)

The rarest of the world's dippers, replacing the previous species in a limited area of the Andes in southern Bolivia and northern Argentina. This bird was building a nest under a rocky overhang. (S8)
